Korey Heath, 13 year old daughter of Mike and Randi Heath of Russellville, began experiencing severe headaches during the summer of 2012. Doctors believed that Korey was having migraines, but treatment provided no relief. The Heaths went to Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) for a second opinion. Doctors at ACH ordered an MRI, which revealed a brain tumor.
On June 18, 2012, Korey was diagnosed with a brain cancer called Medulloblastoma. The following day, doctors at ACH performed surgery and were able to completely remove the tumor! After the surgery, Korey went through chemo and radiation treatments for a year. Though her treatments were completed in June 2013, Korey still had to take medication daily until January 2014.
Now, Korey is medication free and cancer free. Other than routine check-ups, Korey finally gets to lead the life of a normal teenager. Korey is a true superhero and could not have done it without her twin sister, Kasey, by her side.
Morgan Schwehm, two year old daughter of Jeremy and Liz Schwehm of Russellville, began experiencing loss of appetite and stomach pains during September 2013. Morgan’s parents got worried when she wouldn’t eat and took her to be seen at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH). After several tests were ran, Morgan was transferred to a room upstairs where her family was delivered life-changing news.
On September 13, 2013 Morgan was diagnosed with State IV Neuroblastoma and was admitted immediately. Since September, Morgan has had multiple in-hospital stays at ACH, along with numerous out-patient treatments. The doctors at ACH have taken an aggressive treatment route with Morgan and are continuing to battle the cancer. Morgan is scheduled for a surgery on January 30, 2014 and is expected to stay in the hospital for several weeks after.
Morgan’s big sister, Meg, is her best friend and biggest supporter!
We interviewed our candidates on Saturday and couldn’t pick just one… So we picked 3! Our beneficiaries of the 2nd Annual Superhero 5K are 13 year old Korey Heath from Dover, 3 year old Morgan Schwehm from Russellville, and 3 year old Breya Bunting from Dardanelle. In the spirit of three female beneficiaries, our slogan this year is “Fight Like A Girl”! Stay tuned for the stories and pictures of our girls and more race info!
